Reservoir Dreams

about 5 x7 oil on paper
So the knife won't let me sleep. It calls out to me, "Yoohoo, try me again.See if you can do it." So I get out of bed, go back into the studio and try, again. This time I decided to paint the reservoir from one of my pastel paintings. I KNOW the reservoir right? I should be able to do it...right? So I struggle through once again.
I know what Jala means when she talks about cursing the knife. It's so clumsy. But I learned tonight that if I wait a little it dries enough to scumble new paint on top...like I do with pastels. One small satisfaction. Now I will try to sleep again.

I hope you're recovering well!

It's great that you're doing something you know inside and out, the reservoir. There is a similarity to your pastels in the way you're handling the paint...you're leaving the strokes alone, not mushing them together.

Have you checked out Lois Griffel's work? She uses her knife to scumble over dry passages and has these incredibly textured surfaces.

Hi Karen,
It's good to hear from you. And yes I am recovering. As for my pastel to palette knife, I am glad there is some kind of similarity, albeit small. I know Lois's work, but did not think of here in regards to my present struggle. I will go right now and find her book in my library. Thanks for the tip!
Now let me go see what you are up to.
Hugs to you,
Loriann

Wow! Didn't take you long to get your look back! The way you're layering is kind of what I meant about showing light differently from pastels. Thick paint is hard to lay a new color over especially for a messy marvin like me, but your creativity got quick results. Excellent.

p.s. Hope you can sleep now and are recovering!

Brian, You are so sweet. Yes, thick paint is something else with which to work! Egad!!!! I feel like I am moooshing round. Your paintings always get the feeling of light without looking messy like this one.How do you do it? Have you tried any of those quick dry agents so that layering can be done quicker?
Loriann
PS I finally did sleep once I painted and today was a full studio day. I am feeling much better.

Glad to hear your feeling better and I'll try to give some answer on my particular method on my blog. I happen to love your colors in this piece and part of the fun is BEING MESSY! It's great as adults we have the ability to be kids again!

Wow, how totally cool! It's like the reservoir got new clothes and a haircut!

You're right Jala. It sure feels like that. I am not sure if the clothes fit yet.
