full moon rising

9x9 pastel on BFK

18x24 pastel on oil on marble dust board
The full moon was Wednesday night. Both Tuesday and last night were equally dramatic. The moonrise happened immediately after sunset. The sky was that wonderful green blue that it only can be in December when we near the winter solstice. A little sliver of pink appears like a surprise guest. I guess it's time to work on those December twilight scenes I wait all year to do. There's something different about it and I can only paint this special twilight in December/January when it is present...even when I work in the studio. Last year I created  the one on the bottom ...let's see what this year will bring.
It's my birthday today and I can't wait to go outside to paint. Sometimes morning is a long wait.

it's amazing the number of people who have commented on the full moon and especially the light it casts. these paintings are wonderful: i wish i had listened to my instinct and started a painting using moonlight:)

Happy birthday, Loriann!

Last night I was in Kirkland, looking at Casey Klahn's river series when the moon rose. A double-whammy of beautiful images. The sky was decorated with a few clouds and at one point it looked like the moon wore an outfit with a sweetheart neckline!

Well, Happy Birthday Loriann. Hope you have a fun day and are able to get out and paint. I'm debating rather I want to attempt 28 degrees with wind and snow. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Yah, right,
I'll be sitting by the fire. Your energy always amazes me. Your excitement and passion never diminish.

Lead on B,
Your painting buddy

Happy Birthday to one of the very best pastelists ever! I hope this year brings you everything that makes you happy and then some. We can never have too many moon or moonlight paintings - they are so magical!

Hi rahina... there is still time to paint the full moon. The December moon is big and noticeable. I was not quite sure why. I looked it up on line and it said it was the biggest and brightest of 2009.It also went on to say the moon is the closest to us at this point and that it will appear 14 % bigger and 30% brighter. Cool, eh? No wonder we all took notice.
