Excitement and Quietude

7x9 pastel and watercolor on Uart
Ice is getting thicker on the reservoir and with it the light gets a whole different feel. Once again, this is a limited palette: 4 tubes of watercolor and 5 pastels. It was so exciting to paint, yet the feel was silence. there were no birds, not even the usual geese. Silence.
If you are in the vicinity: Washington DC, Bethesda, please come to the opening of the Waverly Street Gallery's Holiday Show. I have 9 new paintings showing in this group show. Most are small oils, plus a couple of pastels.
Tonight, 6-9pm Waverly Street Gallery, 4600 East-West Highway, Bethesda MD
Hope to see you there!

What a stunner this one is... Well done, Loriann!
It does have a sense of movement under all that frozen exterior!

I also want to say that all the "open" spaces where the paper shows through really add to it somehow.

Hi Nika!!!
Thank you. I guess actually freezing helps my brush move faster. I am glad you feel the "unpainted" portions add to it. I really felt it was done.Sometimes that magical hand just reaches out and stops us and then we are thankful. Thanks again!!

Good luck with the show! Wish I lived closer so I could attend!

What strikes me about these quick sketches is how you see and paint the spaces between the trees and don't let them clump together to form a wall. I think our evergreens tend to form the wall, or maybe I haven't learned to see the spaces.

We've had so much rain lately that the puddles are deep enough for laps!

Hi Janelle, I wish you lived closer too. Thanks for the luck!

Hi Kvan!
Walled trees can be an issue. I try to pick places where there are more layers and if not pull one forward and push one back. Sorry about all your rain. We have been having freezing cold. In fact we had our first little snow today! Yay!
