set me free!!!!!

24x36 oil on board- in progress, still
On Wednesday I interview Kay Hurley, an amazing painter in both oil and pastel. (interview forthcoming) At the end of the interview we were talking about painting BIG. Her advise to me, put it on the floor so that I can move 360 around it. That way I will no longer be working on only a landscape, but an abstraction. So that is what I am doing! Once I got over the initial..OMG what do I do with this it was quite freeing. So now it goes from floor to easel over and over. When I am on the floor I find I am only thinking about how one color relates to the next and whether it is a pleasing shape. When it is on the easel I am thinking about how the landscape reads. Painting this big is exciting and frustrating at the same time.
Now out to the river for some morning work.
have a great New Year's Eve! Remember tomorrow morning at 12:01 is the last time to post your entry for the Big Chew- painting give away..

Thanks Lynne!! Have a happy new year!

Hi Brian, king of the big. You are right, going big is a whole different thing...I am trying hard not to get stuck on product...just what happens if I do____. Free is good.

Congratulations for the MAM tie! You're getting to be quite a regular face in the standings! Goes to show what a classy competition Katherine Tyrell is running. It also says a lot for the general good taste of the art blogosphere.

I love watching you sweat over the biggies. :0]

Congrats on the PLACE award on Making a Mark! Yay!

How do you keep the kitties off of the painting when it's on the floor? Banishment?! Surely not!

I love what you're doing and trying here. It sounds like it's already blown a hole in some old ideas about how things go. It's really exciting to see and hear about your ongoing work and achievements! Seems to be glowing already.

Happy New Year!

Hi Sam! Thank you about the MAM awards tie! I really was blown away just for being there!
And... you like watching me sweat, eh? Sweat I will!...especially because the next one is even bigger.

Hi Deborah, Thanks for pushing me to go bigger. I am loving the challenge. Now I just need a bigger studio!

Hi Kvan,

Thank you about the MAM award.A wonderful thing to learn on New Years Eve!
As far as the Kittens...they are NOT allowed in the studio. It is far to dangerous for the little cuties. Luch had pastel on her already...even with out the studio door open. Right now only Kinzo is allowed inside. She knows what to do and has been my muse for years. Last night Luch fell in the hot bath tub...scary! She will stop at nothing!
Thanks too about my newest happenings in the studio!- Loriann

Thanks Celeste!!! I appreciate your support.

Hi Sara and thank you!!111 Kay Hurley is an amazing painter. I had the pleasure of taking a weekend workshop from her this Fall. I think you will enjoy the interview with her. Soon>>>>>>

This is great, Loriann - and I love that Deborah is pushing you to go bigger still! I was in awe at the 24" x 36" you're working at here and still find anything at even half that size to be daunting. I love the idea of setting the painting on the floor so that you can go at it from every direction - I'll have to try that one, too, although it will be a very different experience I'm sure with my tiny little paintings!

Hi Brian! Working big is blowing a whole into what I thought I needed to do and opening a door to possibilities. Meanwhile I keep trying to let go of producing a product in order to sell. I need to be open to stretch. I highly recommend it. When I consider the difference between those tiny "nubs" and small strokes I use to make my plein air pastels and the 4" house brush I use for the big work it blows my mind! .
