sunny california..heehee

9x11 pastel and watercolor on Uart
OK So the rain is coming down in buckets, the Amtrak is canceled, trees are down, we lost our power (it's back for now), but I am not ready to cry "uncle" yet. The landscape is awesome: wonderful shapes and colors with a built in harmony. Lucky me!
Yesterday Paul and I went to the San Diego Museum of Fine Art to see two shows: the Toulouse Lautrec  exhibitions and the exhibition of Japanese woodcuts. Awesome...both. The amazing thing was how interconnected they were! I will write more about the shows later.  Two ideas stand out: the use of diagonals to lead the viewer into the picture plane and the use of flat color to portray space. I thought about those two things when composing this painting.

Pineapple Express! I remember having to wait for bulldozers to remove muddy slides so that I could make my way home. You make it look dreamy and lovely -- not at all how I remember it.

You are making the most of that wet weather, Loriann. I hope you get to see the sun at some point!

Lovely works Loriann, misty yet pretty I especially like the way the diagonal telegraph posts lead the viewer into the painting. The colours are very nice as wet and muddy can be drab yet you have made the earth very rich looking and there is the familar pearly pinks and greens in your paintings that you are known for.
I do have some watercolour snowscenes on both my tree and watercolour challenge, thanks for asking. Great to hear you are slowing down and enjoying your vacation while painting in your car!

Hi Kvan, yes the pineapple express and the bulldozers are around doing their thing. The landscape really is beautiful..I do believe...from inside the car that is.

Hi Donna! Sun comes tomorrow..I can't wait!

Hi Caroline!I will check your tree and watercolor challenge to see your snow paintings. The pinks are so prominent in the landscape here..a sort of dusty rose. Can't wait for the sun tomorrow! You would be the one to notice the telephone poles, you always have excellent observations! thanks for your comment!!!!!

Loving all these rain paintings. The color is awesome.
I bet you're really missing those kittens. It's so hard to be away while they're small...
The Toulouse-Lautrec musuem in Albi, France is superb and charming at the same time.

Weather like this allows us to paint with atmospheric mystery. I painted the atmosphere created by the California wild fires a couple summers ago, which created incredible effects. Nice work!

Hi Jala! Thanks about the rain paintings. When I was in California I missed my kittens terribly. I am so glad to be home now. I will be certain to visit the Toulouse Lautrec museum when I am in France. I was really blown away by his work in mass at San Diego's museum.

Hi Ed, You are right. The wild fires did make amazing color. I think all those particles reflect light/color...same as what happens in moisture. Thanks about my work.
