new method ????

9x9.5 pastel and watercolor on Uart

watercolor underpainting
Worked in a whole new way  due to the fact I didn't want to walk 10 minutes back to the car so that I could dry the watercolor first. Hmmmm. I was actually sitting inside the lake, well the drained lake that is. The bottom was very rocky and hard to negotiate. Excuses excuses. The bottom line is I didn't want to wait for my painting to dry and I grew seriously impatient. So I put the pastel on the pooled water and rubbed and rubbed. Patted with a paper towel and then laid more pastel down. I made neutrals with submerged complements. Interesting effect.

On another note...I keep telling myself I have to stay in the studio and just work. But I realize that without my plein air time I feel DEAD. So the beat will go on. And on. And on.

I admire artists who make art every day - these are very nice.

You put the pastel down into wet watercolor? And, you didn't make a muddy mess? You ARE good!

Your commitment to plein air painting and time outdoors to observe truly informs and makes your studio work meaningful. Don't give it up!!

Loriann, you are wonderful you just keep painting on through the festive season with such style! I love your watercolour painting as it looks very beautiful with the fresh colours, a nice combination of colours too. Happy New Year!

Well, it sure seemed to work. i know of other artists that work into the wet with pastel. I like the result that you got. Have you ever used pastel as an underpainting and used alcohol to dissolve it? the alcohol dries very quickly so there isn't the kind of wait like with watercolor. i'm sure you have tried it as you have tried so many things but i thought I would put it out there as an idea. i too admire the fact that you keep going and keep painting. and we get to see the results which are most often remarkable. You do inspire! Keep up the good work!

hi helen and thanks! i love to work.

Hi Kvan! It was a mess at first, but paper towels helped me move it around and it gradually became drier.
Thanks for your support about plein air...i am like an addict.

Hi caroline! happy new year! thank you about the watercolor...it changed so much because i wouldn't wait. ooops.

hi sarah, yup, i have tried pastels and alcohol...i just don't like wasting my precious pastels to turn the into paint...when i can just use paint. cheap i guess. maybe i should think about it in situations like this..it would have been a better solution.

I am so pleased with your determination to go on and on and on! The work you make is wonderful!
Inovation is wonderful! I was once, long, long ago, doing a watercolor outside in a snow storm and could not figure out why the brush kept slipping. When I stopped painting long enough to look, I discovered the water was freezing.... my brush was ice skating...

Keep going on and on....

Hi Marilyn and thanks about my determination. Yes, I have that. My husband calls me the hamster because I am always on the wheel. And I to have painted on frozen watercolor. Often in the winter that happens. Yet when I bring it to the car's heater to dry it the paint smooges all over in interesting more abstract ways. Did that happen to you?

The under painting watercolor alone really spoke to me. So fluidly alive.
