studio gremlins and new years

6x6 memory painting, lake needwood
Artists work and create constantly. In order to not be static and continually push ourselves into new realms we constantly make some work we don't like. They are the path to discovery ....but they, themselves are lacking. Maybe you were working out color combinations or pushed a painting so far it went past its beauty. These are called studio gremlins. Do you really need your gremlins to haunt you next year?
In a little over 32 hours it is 2013....and that is time to burn the studio gremlins. Go through all your work, find the ones that you KNOW have to go and have a little burning ceremony.
I can't wait for New Years Day in the studio! Join me and let me know how it feels.
Happy New Year!

Hi Loriann

For the last 38 years or so, I have had great burnings. This behavior in turn causes a cathartic moment in time. It is the ahhhhhh factor.

Loriann have a Great New Year and see you around the block.

I have a New Year's Day "culling the herd" kind of purge. I pull out all of the work from the previous year and sort it into YES or NO piles. The YES pile has paintings that are either working or could work with some tweaking. The NO pile gets hosed off or shredded.

Do you really burn your gremlins?

Hi Kvan,
Yes, I too have piles: a yes pile, an absolutely no pile and let's look again. It feels good when I burn the nos. I put them in the fireplace. I don't even want to hose them off...it wonderful to separate- completely. Like Micros said, "a cathartic moment." I like your term of "culling the herd."
Have a great new year and new year's purge~

Hi Sam, I promise I won't burn this one. have a wonderful new year's celebration!
