another retro fave: the importance of sky color

10x10 pastel on watercolor
"The sky is the soul of all scenery. It makes the earth lovely at sunrise and splendid at sunset. In the one it breathes over the earth a crystal-like ether, in the other a liquid gold." Thomas Cole
Doesn't that just say it all? Here is an autumn sunrise. The glory of sunrise is thrilling!

Thoreau said something like the sky reflected in water is the eye of the soul.

Truly glorious! I'd love to know your reading list and where you get these quotes from. I've a book voucher to spend and could do with a recommendation.

I have studio envy real baaaaddd.... ;o) Any chance your happy helpers could swing by this way?

Oh! I knew it was going to be yellow. Beautiful! Great back windows... nice fat insulation.., Don't forget to tuck the time capsule into that stuffing, and have each of the guys sign the beam. Is the door on the north side? Is the post holding up the loft? More pictures!

Aren't you EXCITED?!

Hi Loriann,
I am glad to see how well your studio is progressing-love that yellow color that you selected. Your latest painting echos that wonderful Thomas Cole quote. The
yellow orange on the left soars! This is a most beautiful painting.

Loriann, I'm so very happy for you!!!!
We met in one of Richard McKinley's workshops a few years ago.
I delighted that you are feeling well and painting and growing in your art.
Your new studio is like a dream - enjoy it!I'll be looking forward to seeing all the great art you will create in it.
Best wishes,
Lenka

Hi Bob! that's a great quote!

Hi Lisa, I wish I could remember where I got that quote. I had written it in one of my sketchbooks long ago. I rediscovered it while looking through them.It really speaks to where i am right now. I liked Bob's Thoreau quote too.
Ps I will ask my helpers if they would like to cross the pond and lend you a hand. ;-)

Hi Cindy and thanks! I can't wait till it's done!I do feel real lucky!

Hi Sam, You guessed right..yellow with plum trim (later.) The "boys" like the signing idea and I will work on the capsule. You are full of good ideas. Yes the door and the big window wall is all facing north. And yes the post is essential so the loft does not collapse. you seem to know building. More pictures later! I am thrilled when I am not totally exhausted! Doing the inside work ourselves is hard!

Hi Sarah, indeed the birthing is easier this way. Thanks!

Hi NJ,
Thank you about the painting. It's what I am trying to do. As soon as the studio is done i want this one to be the start of something big.
The sky is so essential.
Thaks for stopping by!

Hi Lenka,
Thanks for stopping by! What a pleasure to hear from you again, a nice surprise.
How are you doing? Have you continued to work in pastel with an underpainting? Richard's workshops are always great, don't you think?
Thanks about my studio...It's starting to feel real. i don't think I will believe it till I move in.
till later, Loriann

Wow, wow and wow! This looks like it's going to be splendid

and that pastel at the top is very definitely splendid. Can I feature it in my Sunday post this week?

Amazing painting, Loriann! It shows how little is necessary to say trees, water and sky. The studio looks pretty good too!

What I especially love about the sky is its depth. I like when the clouds help me see it. I can see it in the layers of pastel over watercolor.

Hi Donna,
Thanks about the painting ...less is more.I wish it could be even less! How is your new home?

Hi Liz,
Thanks! Skies are exciting things, don't you think?

Loriann, I have to strip wallpaper and paint before new kitchen appliances are delivered. As soon as the leaky skylight in my studio is fixed I will be able to safely set out my pastels and paint (LOL)
