On another note....Are you looking for ideas of what to see, read and think about this January? Here are a couple of my faves.

| Balthus- King of Cats |
1. Go to the Metropolitan Museum to see "Cats and Girls." A cat fanatic, Balthus (at age 27) declared himself “The King
of Cats” and to prove this he painted his self portrait with a striped feline who affectionately rubs against his
knee. The exhibition has many paintings you will never see again, since they are from private collections. A unexpected delight was Balthus's book titled "Mitsou"- the story of his found and lost cat filled with 40 illustrations that he made when he was just a boy. It's all on view through January 12. 2. Plan a Vermeer road trip. 14 of the 36 known Vermeers are on the East Coast. Start with the show at the Frick- "Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals: Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis." (This show closes on the 16th.) You can end your road trip with the Vermeer beauty at the National Gallery. Check out this

3. Read an interesting book- When you see the show at the Frick you will see another star "The Goldfinch" by Carel Fabritius. This beautiful painting has found a new audience since the best selling book based on the taking of this painting hit the shelves. While it's not a real art book, it's an excellent read. I recommend it. Here is
a small article about the painting's resurgence (due to the book) on cbs.

Beautiful art to visit and the goldfinch is my favourite. While we do have interesting exhibitions here, they don't often contain the work of the masters, so I have to travel to see those.
Funnily enough I gave The Goldfinch book to my daughter for a Christmas gift. Now I want my own after dipping into before it travelled to her. :)
