9x12, pastel and watercolor on board, $200.This is another scene from the rocky beaches near Mather Gorge. The tranquil water has the most beautiful reflections with the rich colors of late summer. Only a few Canadian geese shared this view with me. Lucky me.

In this image that yellowy-green of the trees next to that pinkish rock color sparkles and collides and my eye just keeps going back to those pure colors!

Thanks Karen! It's amazing what complementary colors can do. I have been thinking a lot about temperature and what happens when you keep the value the same but change the temperature. Fun.

I've been turning over those same ideas in my head lately too...how much can the temps be changed, how much can the colors be changed, if the value is held in check. What a cool thing to push in the work! I want to work on this more! I think you're totally successful with this so often--to me it's what makes your images be both quiet and vibrant at the same time.
Do you ever use Wallis or other sanded paper? Or do you prefer the method you described to me, and if so, why?

I have come to believe that after value, temperature is the next most important consideration. Sounds like we are in agreement.
Yes, I do use wallis sometimes. My irregular/marble dust surface is my favorite, at present. Tomorrow I will paint on a piece of mounted wallis board Then I will answer your question about the differences. Do you have a preference?
I've never tried the marble dust method you described, although it intrigues me... the surfaces from underneath that assert their presence, but in a way that contributes to the image as a whole. Yes, do let me know about the difference for you with the paper if you think of it!
