Mid-afternoon, down at Great Falls park the light through the trees appears emerald colored. It's all different now.

Golden Glass/ November

10 x 10 pastel on watercolor on Uart paper, for sale at open studio
19 degrees this morning so I decided to wait until the mercury reached a balmy 40. River Bend Park was beautiful (as always). The light was low and golden with a hint of melon and the water was glassy.
The tricks to painting in the cold: long johns, car heater nearby, thermos of hot chai, and many layers of clothing. I wonder how long I can last outdoors this year ...I don't want to stop, no matter how cold I get! It seems like the light only gets better as the days get colder! Anyone want to venture a guess as to when I'll have to retire to the studio?

September 3, 2008 Private Beach

9x12, pastel and watercolor on board, $200.
This is another scene from the rocky beaches near Mather Gorge. The tranquil water has the most beautiful reflections with the rich colors of late summer. Only a few Canadian geese shared this view with me. Lucky me.

August 2, 2008 Sweet Escape (diptych2)

13x21.5 pastel on board 13x10.5 each individual piece
Just disappearing into the warmth and luxuriousness of a summer day, that's what this painting is about. Can you feel it?
I said I would write more about 25/75. Actually it's 2/3 and 1/3, those are the proportions of light to dark passages in a painting.

July 24, 2008 Sweet Tooth

7x9 pastel and watercolor on board
Back to the river is like filling my sweet tooth again. So satisfying.
