8x8 pastel on Uart paperRight past Dulles Airport you find farmland that is quickly being converted into subdivisions:-( The land is gorgeous; rolling hills, speckled trees and peek-a-boo light. At this particular sunset it reminded me of California.

I just got back from CA, and it does remind me of there! It's quite beautiful, and has a watery quality to it...did you allow more of a watercolor underpainting to show?
You are observant Karen! This time I left 30% visible watercolor. It felt good to leave the vibrant color.

I like that you are working in both watercolor and pastel. When you say you left 30% visible watercolor, do you mean you also worked pastel over the image? Or, do you mix as you go?
Good question Melinda. When I paint I first use watercolor or oil and complete a total skeleton painting. It covers the whole surface and is made up of the colors with which I want the pastel to "dance." With that complete and dry I next go into it with my pastels. A year ago I would almost fully cover my underpainting with pastel. Now I am trying to exercise restraint and make my decisions more carefully, rather than throwing myself in with abandon. A long answer, eh? 70% of the watercolor is covered, 305 showing...by choice.
