Preparatory Work/The River

watercolor on moleskin paper
These three small works are from my moleskin sketchbook. I have been trying to decide exactly how the composition and light will be for this large painting. It's always best for me to fiddle a lot like this before moving big. Due to Brian's influence I have been turned on to this new (to me) surface. It can take a lot of abuse.
I want to thank Katherine for noticing my blog and mentioning it on her site.
Back to work!

I like that they chance...they evolve...how many of these do you usually do?

oops, I meant that they 'change'. bad typing.

It depends Karen. Sometimes I know exactly what I want. And other times I have a vague idea, but am searching how best to do it. In that case I could do 6 or more. Right now I am in the second scenario.

Thanks for visiting my blog! You art is lovely and I wish I had the guts to try watercolors. But I am too intimidated to give it a try. Seems very unforgiving but you handle it well, my dear. Looks like I will have to stick with the palette knife ...

Hi Leslie,
Your palette knife paintings are beautiful, no need to change! Watercolors really aren't that bad. I had never used them before, when 4 years ago Richard Mckinley introduced it to me as the underpainting for my pastel.I still have a lot to learn, but they do set up a painting faster than anything else! I must confess have never created a watercolor painting.

It's great to see the progression here, Loriann - I love the value sketch. Is that charcoal?

Brian, It's just pencil. We will see where the progression will take me. Maybe I need to work on some value studies to take me away from the sort of stuck color.

Thanks Jala, I love the vast space. It's harder to come by here...I guess I will need to go out west.
