Olana Glow 4

8x21 pastel on watercolor/Uart paper

Here's to taking my own advice. The foreground needed to be darker...maybe even more, but I think I have run out of "tooth." It's better, but certainly not perfect. It does have distance, but not the beauty I saw in my mind's eye. Sometimes you just have to go on:-) On to my next lady-in-waiting.

I'll take your advice too. Nice dark foreground, and it got way more glowy in this version.

Thanks Karen, Now I want to scrape the whole front down and do a new underpainting there. I would rather have the dark transparent.

Hi Loriann,
I like the progression of the last few paintings that you have posted. Keep working on this series and see where it takes you. This will give you a chance to explore color combinations. I really like the bold strokes of colbalt blue in the left foreground of todays painting. The colors that you used in the sky -work and give a sense of light .BTW thank you for the photos of Olana -one of these days I will have to go there.

"...not the beauty it was in my mind's eye...": how often are we able to translate that into paint/pastel, anyway? Perhaps never.

Thanks for the encouraging and insightful comment NJ. I think I will keep plugging away at these Hudson River scenes.

I'll be looking forward to see where you take this series as well, Loriann - this looks really beautiful. We're doing an unplanned overnight trip to my parents' this weekend and are going to visit Olana on the way up - weather permitting!

Hi Takeyce, The view at Olana is a breathtaking one. I am sure MANY artists have felt compelled to paint there.
