Rose Colored River

8x8 pastel and watercolor on Uart paper

Another one from Riverbend. It's funny how the river appears pinkish when the when the light hits the muddy river. This view was soooooo confusing which actually made it easier. No drawing just shapes.

If you are a plein air painter or collector please take a moment to take this survey from the old Plein Air magazine- www.pleinairmagazine.com
Hopefully it will resurface.

Hi Loriann
I like that use of pink-which is really a tinted red purple. It helps to create atmosphere. Trees & water together make for some interesting compositional ideas.Todays painting reminded me of some of the PA Impressionists .
I took the survey from Plein Air magazine.
I am hoping that the magazine will return. It was a great read. BTW do you read either American art Collector or Western Art Collector? I find these magazines to be very inspiring.

Hi Loriann,
I wanted to add that I am going to start another series of paintings that feature trees along a river or reservoir. Funny how "Rose Colored Pink" showed up in my e-mail in box just as this idea was starting- an interesting coincidence. Although these paintings for the most part will be studio based I intend to do many studies . I also have a lot of images in my memory banks to draw upon but going outside helps to reframe these images. I live close to the Passaic River and I do clean it up. Until I moved close to the Passaic I never saw an OLIVE colored river!!.It is a shame what we have done to oue waterways. The ducks and gesse seem to like it but I wonder at times what must they be thinking about this river? My paintings may be inspired by the mighty Passaic but they are more of an interpretation rather than an exact recording. Today I noticed a wonderful old dead tree right on the waters edge. It may be dead but as subject matter it is very much alive. Besides the Passaic another river that I will return to is the Hudson which I think is one of the worlds great rivers.

I love the pink. I'm so glad you wrote that...that it was so confusing so no drawing just shapes. When we were out in the city I had that experience lately (confusion of so much), and I think I got lost in the drawing. Thanks for the reminder.

Very nice Loriann. You've made an exciting piece that commands attention. Congrats on getting into the plein air event. You did a great work. Anything involving judges is tough, let alone in the art world. Your happy with the piece and thats good enough.

Cheers

Hi NJ and thanks. I am glad that you took the Plein Air survey and yes I sure hope it returns. In addition I read American Art Collector and Southwest Art. Pastel Journal can be good too.
So you are draw to rivers as well...hmmmmm. I certain understand. I don't really know the Passaic River, but I believe all rivers are beautiful. I do love the Hudson and will paint up there more over the summer and fall. It is so different than my Potomac. Deep, wide and embraced by mountains and cliffs. ooooooooh la la.
Good luck with your new series. I will continue with my river series as well.

Thanks Brent and Brian! You have to be your own judge... and as we all well know that is hard enough. :-)

This is SO cool! Very abstract, which I love, and beautiful color, which of course I also love.

Thanks Jala, There are many advantages to not understanding the objects you paint and instead understanding the light.:-)
