value study- san luis rey mission at sunset

10x12 pastel on BFK
My Dad and Mae are amazing people.  After working hard their whole lives, they now use their retirement  to volunteer at the San Luis Rey Mission. Others may golf, but Dad and Mae work almost full time helping others at the mission and its school. It blows me away.
So before leaving I knew I had to do a painting of this important place in their lives. Here is the value study. We were racing to get to their home in time for dinner and the sun was setting fast. Tomorrow I will post the color version.

Last night, I dreamt I did some pretty good value studies. At least I dreamt about making some art.

Can't wait to see them Sam. If you can dream about them, they will really be good.

This value study looks positively inspired, Loriann. It's full of peace and reverence. And your Dad and Mae must be very special people!

had eye checkup; dilation works very well with this value piece.

you think it's a surprise that you come from nice people?

Hi Janelle and thank you, I made some small changes on the value study before continuing with color. I love that you say "it's full of peace and reference." And yes they are very special people. Check tomorrow for the finished version, ok?

Hi Sam, You always manage to make me smile. Thank you for that:-)

b,

So simple but enough detail to really identify the subject. The subtle references to windows, walls, and tower says mission in so many ways. The low trees to the left with just enough horizon light showing through. It is very peaceful and quiet. There are a couple of things I might change but I want to see what you do with the color version. Nicely done B!
I hope to post something before 2010, cross you fingers. Take care my friend,
Your painting buddy.
P.S. Hope that all is well at home.
Your dad and Mae, sound amazing as you say.
Great examples. Like Dog says, nice people begat nice people. The mystery is solved.
