the last three and the realization

After blogging all the paintings for the show I leave you with the one fact, one very strong realization- the concept rules. Without a clear concept you have no painting. In order to to that you must ask yourself...why are you painting this painting? Write it down. Remember what it was that drew you to this scene/idea.  After that, your job is to orchestrate..be dramatic..exaggerate a note or two in the diva. Make her sing. But keep the back up players quieter.

I can look back at some real duds I have made and I know why they failed. Concept. I have learned that, even if it is plein air, I have to dwell on the concept to make it powerful. That is the reason I think about the place I will paint the night before. I visualize it. Plan where I will be and what my goal will be. Yes, they look spontaneous, and sometimes there are surprises, but I have a concept before I leave.

Tomorrow is the opening 6-9pm. Hope to see ya'all there.

Thanks Pam! I am almost ready!
You are right a sense of place is very important...so is a deeper feeling, an insight to something more.

Thanks for the remarks about concept. From them I gather that you're nowhere if you can't share where you are. I think that's what you do so well in your paintings.

As they say, enjoy the show! Be present, and wallow in the admiration you so righteously deserve (though I suspect your mind might want to wander on to your next paintings...).

Excellent thoughts on this post! Which leads me to my second comment: what a pleasure to see your works together. Each of them is very lovely, but combined have an impressive additional impact.

Best wishes for you show!

I'm sure that the show is a knock-out! Thank you for posting the paintings on your blog. Stunning. Ethereal. Beautiful.

I will keep your words in mind. When I'm at a new spot to paint, I am happy just to capture the quality of the light and "concept" is more advanced than I feel ready to ponder.

You are an artist who does as she says and that is very inspiring!

Hi Katherine,
Thank you so much for your kind words! Concept can start as something as solid as "I want to understand that light that hits the water and spreads like a jewel." It helps to articulate, written or verbal what you are trying to achieve. It may look a little kooky..but hey, who cares right? For other ideas try reading beautiful poetry and prose. So many of my ideas springboard from my reading and the visual input I am constantly receiving. It's a combo deal. I am really no more advanced. I just always think about painting.
I wish you were here for the show!
Loriann
