edge of the world

9x12 pastel and watercolor on marble dust board
To create this one I used an old, discarded board. It had an underpainting, I think it was oil. For some reason the board was so porous (gessoed marble dust was on it) so I struggled to cover the other painting. It made me only paint the large shapes and paint them with thick watercolor, almost like oil. (It's funny how the gap between the medium is beginning to close.)
The color of the grasses first attracted me, but then upon looking I was most intrigued with the way the trees and the edge of grass met the distant mountains.

Today is the "quick draw" event. 10-12am pick a place in the town center it work...with and audience. Yipes.

Oh wow...I love this one, Loriann! The simple shapes and atmospheric perspective give a sense of endless, open country. To me, it also gives the impression that a canyon could be on the other side of the hill.

The colors in the foreground hill mass are wonderful; I really admire your use of color!

Have fun at the quick-draw event - that sounds like fun :).

Radiant. Unified. I want to break each color out and study it.

Fantastic.

Have fun @ the QD.

You got a fantastic result here. Love the idea of using thick water colour. I like to work on boards which have an existing painting. It gives some solid ground and courage somehow.

Maybe having a second-generation composition makes this the best one.

Hope you win the shoot-out.

Thanks so much Sonya. I did love being on top of that hill.

Hi Sally, you're right it is very different for me. We don't have this kind of space where I live.

Hi Casey!
Wow, thanks! PS I am so glad to have finished the quick draw, now I can exhale.

Hi Sheila,
Thick watercolor is fun to work with.....and being on a recycled board really does change the approach. You have to change to avoid confusion...maybe work should always be done that way.
thank you!

Hi Sam,
I survived the shoot-out. Glad that you like this one. thank you!
