10x10 pastel and watercolor on Uart
One trap plein air painters can become victim to is the hunt. What I mean is searching for the "perfect place" to paint. Beauty is made. It's made by the artist. As I say this I admit that I am going to Washington State for the next month - to paint. In order to earn this I have been forcing myself to paint within a mile of my house. This is part of my streets are rivers series.
While in Washington I will be participating in Richard McKinley's plein air boot camp. Starting this Saturday I will have 3 intensive days of painting and taking in the amazing knowledge of Richard. Next, there are 3 processing days where I go off on my own and work, then there are 3 days in the studio consolidating and making resolve. An amazing time! Of course while I am not in boot camp I will be constantly painting. This month of work is like stocking up on the winter oil for the furnace. Yipee!
Gotta go pack!
oops, I forgot......... I remembered to take a photo for the watercolor underpainting for PB.

Wow, what a great plan! I fell in love with Northwestern landscape on this past trip. I like how no-nonsense it is, almost harsh in places. And yet full of mystery....
Have a fantastic time and I can't wait to see what you bring back!
Great point~
~that beauty is made!
Have a beautiful trip,
I know you will.
Love the lead-in element to this one.
Sounds like a great trip.
Looking forward to see what you have to post when you return.
Have fun!
Oh, I'm so happy for you! Boot camp sounds like a wonderful way to get stoked. Just being AWAY sounds wonderful. Will you be posting while there, or will it be a total cut-off? Either way I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing the results.
I like this post's painting the best of your "river streets". The darker values, the rich tones, the golden spots of light, the call of the winding road are all very appealing.
The ranch is halfway twixt Washington and Maryland. Just a thought...
Hi Nika! The northwest is beeeautiful! And the colored air has mystery, yes! I will be posting as I go, so check back!
Hi Jill,
Thank you!
Hi Erik!
You don't have to wait till I return... I am a total maniac and will continue to post all through the trip!!! As long as I can find internet I will post! Till later!!
Hi Sam!! I wish I could just drop out of the plane and be at the ranch for a visit....maybe another time, K?
And fear not, no cut off for you i will be posting as I go!!
Thanks about the painting!
Darn! We could have met in person! I was scheduled to go that very workshop with my painting friends...alas the unforeseen has kept me at bay! I hear he is a great teacher and you will leave with new eyes!
These are beautiful pieces! I love the curved composition, the color, the glowing light...delicious!
Hi Brenda, Darn is right!I have been taking a plein air workshop religiously, each year, for the 6 years. He IS awesome...everything you have heard is true and MORE!
Thanks about the paintings!
Lucky!! I'll be thinking of you out there! You'll gain so much.
Makes me laugh that you're making yourself 'earn' it. :)
But don't you think we can sometimes go on that hunt even right around our own neighborhood, and then sometimes when somewhere new, we can so easily find the composition? It can be so inspirational.
Excellent work, as usual! I hope you have a fabulous time, full of inspiring moments and fun times.
I love both the watercolor sketch and the pastel. Wow, the colors and the transparency...
It sounds great. Best wishes!
Hi B, just got home tonight so just getting my first look at this. You've got to know that this is so beautiful ... any watercolorist would be proud to have produced this gorgeous piece. Sorry to say but I like the watercolor better than the combined with pastel.
I'm not afraid to tell you that because you're a master at both. Some day I hope you'll save a couple of these. Sorry I took so long noticing this beauty.
I love it.
PB.
Hi Karen! You know i love it out here and my check-up from the doc (richard) is always the best!
I love the new places..but the trap is sometimes painting IT...postcards...instead of mystery and edges...know what I mean?
Hi Melinda!
Thank you so much about the painting...stay tuned!
Hi PB!
Welcome back home!
I am not surprised you like the watercolor better...but still I refuse to go out in my underwear! Who knows????
Glad you are back! I'll check my email!
