6x6 oil on board
Whether brush or pastel stick, your mark or the way you move your colors says a lot. While I love the smooth, brush less surface of Whistler's nocturnes, the dance of the mark is paramount to me. It's about energy and feeling. I struggled to find myself and my mark with oil. I was enticed by glazing and its alluring, glassy surface. All the time I kept feeling it was not authentic for me. Now I am mixing the glassy smooth with palette knife and brush. It's much more like my life- a mixed up jumble of all the good stuff. I found that those thick juicy strokes on top really made me feel happy.
This is a studio piece done from my plein air study. Check out this click back to see how I began. It really took a life of its own.

You totally tricked me, before I clicked on the image to see it larger, I thought it was pastel.
I think this jumble of juicy strokes does suit you better then smooth and glassy:)
This piece has gone a long way from how it started, wonderful color harmony.
I still can't get over the beauty of the chincoteague painting, it really is out of this world.
Really love that bit of red.
This is so you. I just went back to find out where Casey said your oil looked like pastel (June 29th). Came back here and there's Nika saying the same thing! I also totally agree with her about the Chincoteague one.
Love the juxtaposition of the red and blue here. And yes - if not for the impasto knife strokes towards the top giving it away, I'd have thought it was pastel as well!
Whoa, I saw this painting on my sidebar and was totally drawn in. Glowing!!!!
Thank you Nika! So I tricked you, eh? I am glad the two mediums are becoming less separate. The journey will always continue and the ride is awesome. Thanks about the Chincoteague one.
Hi Lisa...it's funny I have no idea why I did that red...I don't even remember doing it. Then it was there. My subconscious knows more than me;-D
Hi Sam of the lovely blue flowers! Pastel and oil keep coming closer and closer. Glad you like the Chincoteague one!
Hi Sonya, I think I am finding my way;-D Thank you about the painting.
Hi Janelle!!! Thank you!!
I agree with the other comments. I, too, thought this was a pastel until I clicked on the thumbnail and discovered it was oil! It looks like your pastels -- deep and thoughtful and playful, too. Well done!
Thanks Katherine!!!! Deep, thoughtful and playful...I like that!
Love the dreamy quality of this painting, the colours sing!
Hi Ann!!! Thanks for visiting my blog! And thank you about the painting!!
