give yourself permission

9x12 oil (with pastel) on marble dust
So I have been working with oil in the studio, experimenting with surfaces. Recently I have been loving using oil paint on my marble dust boards (that I normally use for pastel.) After a few layers of underpainting in oil I kept trying to get the feeling I wanted. Paint, scrape, paint, scrape, paint wash off. Add pastel, take off pastel, add more oil paint, wipe, scrape..... and on and on....Now, what is it?
After yesterdays' s talk with Marla I kept hearing her words in my head.."nothing is precious..give yourself permission." So, as you notice, I gave myself full permission, And the painting has gone through many metamorphoses. Like a child growing, some phrases are more delightful, some are awkward. No regrets..... because it's not about keeping, it's about exploring.
I am not really looking for another pretty picture.

I can see how much you enjoyed this one! The lilac blue in the foregriund is perfect. I'm giving myself permission to try new materials at the moment and just play. Isn't it liberating...

Your underpaintings are fascinating! With their soft edges and blended harmonious colors your options for finishing seem limitless. I enjoy your explorations almost as much as you do! :-)

Fascinating to see your process.

Hi Lisa! What have you been playing with? Part of me enjoyed part of this painting..the other part absolutely hates it and sees my struggle. Oh well...that is the nature of the game.

Hi Donna and thank you! Well said,my options for finishing/resolving this one (anyone for that matter) are limitless. Each one is a different painting. I tell myself, just pick one and go for it.

Hi Casey..i am going, i am going..more later!
Marla is wonderful. I am working on writing up the interview in my evening time. I think you will like it.

Hi Becky Joy... glad you are enjoying the ride.

Great, I recently came to the very same conclusion in the process of painting/repainting and eventually destroying a painting that started out OK, but lacking something. The world doesn't really need another pretty picture, neither do I. What we need is to explore and push beyond what we already know. Getting there may take you by the road that won't necessarily look pretty, although it might, you just never know:) In relation to painting, always remind myself to be ready to "discard the precious" as Casey Klahn once said. I'm willing to discard the precious to get to the real treasure.

Loriann - Dorland's wax medium. That's the product I was supposed to email you about. I use it from time to time and like it. Gamblin also makes a cold wax you mix in with your paints.

Anyway, this post made me think of wax medium! Fun!

Hi B!!!!!!!
Wow, what a journey.
With your experience you don't need permission to do what ever you want because you already do. Each one of your posts is a chapter in your ongoing book of how to learn, paint and feel. Since you started blogging, I think there is enough material for at least three books of inspiration!

I may have to change mediums to explore the endless possibilities you bring to us each day. Thanks,
pb

It's so good to see your "permission slips". Beauty lurks in all of them.

Wow, Loriann interviews Marla! You're getting close to precious with that combo. Can't wait to read it.

Hi Nika, Sounds like we are on exactly the same plane. good company. the world doesn't need another pretty picture.

Lisa,Thanks about the wax medium. I will have to check it out.

Hey PB, You are way too nice to me! books of inspiration.... I am just on a journey-like you. Thank you!
As far as medium change... there is so much out there that is enticing to try. One exploration feeds the other medium's knowledge. Might we see a new exploration for PB?

Hi Sam!
My "permission slips" with beauty lurking...heehee.
As for my interview with Marla..she's amazing. You are going to love hearing what she had to say. I did!

The last under painting is just incredible really mysterious and magical like a Turner painting. That is my favourite wow! Great to hear about you letting go and working so hard, thanks for sharing the journey with us Loriann.

Hi Caroline, I feel this is going to be a very long trip...easier to make int the studio than en plein air.
Thanks for your supportive words about my painting!

It is so amazing how you made that painting to a very stunning one. The process looks so difficult to do. But still you manage to make it so beautiful.
