tree study with glazes

Today the goal was simply a tree study.
The method was to concentrate on optical mixing. This can be done two ways (that I know of): glazing and side by side color (like pointillism.) When glazing you do not reach for the right color you make it through layers of color. Gold with blue on top makes a golden green. It's sometimes hard just not to reach for the color you know you want. The watercolor underpainting helps because with it I choose the glow colors and make the skeleton on which to build.
At a certain point I rely on temperature contrasts to create vibration.

Really nice, Loriann. Will you do the same thing with the side-by-side method? I would be curious to know which method works best for you and why.

Wow! All the more interesting for you NOT using the right color. You mix color as carefully as some people mix martinis! Shaken, stirred, blended, whatever it takes. I love it.

Hi Donna, I have worked that way before and sometimes pieces are still in my work (even in this one!). I prefer the layering.

Hi Katherine...a martini..nice.

Nice piece B. I'm curious ... after seeing several of your pastel pallets with numerous colors and values, yet you still choose to layer or glaze. I guess there is still too much illustrator in me ... I would go straight to the color I want. Well, I guess that's not totally true, the range of colors and values available is meager at best, so I guess some mixing takes place.

Please keep doing what you do since you do it so well.
I'll always be amazed at the process you go through.
Pleasant dreams B.

I can see that working with transparent colour paint but it surprises me that you can do that with pastel, surely the pastel is opaque and would cover completely the colour beneath. Very interesting to read about the process I believe Monet worked like that by placing colour in that way. Bonny painting Loriann the colours are great.

Hi PB, Good question. I do it for many reasons..I like the depth and vibration it makes and the challenge. heeheee
I know today is the day...good luck with your surgery!

Hi Caroline,
By layering pastel with a very delicate hand you get just small pieces of pigment and space....a vibration and a way to glaze. The watercolor adds another dimension and a more normal glaze.
Thanks about the bonny painting...I always love you UK words!!!
