the ugly duckling

8x10 oil on linen
Do you know that story The Lucky Duckling? It's the story where the swan hangs out with the ducks and everyone thinks she is ugly...not knowing that she is a swan. Well..I am sure hoping one day I will be a swan...but for now it's the ugly duckling all the way. Funny way of saying that as I morph away from what I understand- painting plein air every day, producing a new work each time- to working from my stored memory I am seriously suffering from the uglies. I reread  Carlson to remind myself why I really need to make this change." The memory exaggerates the essentials; the trifles of incidents tend to become blurred...Until mastery of memory is reached, the brain refuses to act as a filter. "
Without the filter you record the information but the mood needs to be the most important.
My recent change in  content has actually made some subscribers leave. I am very sad to see them go, but I have to do what I have to do.
Quack.

PS I will hopefully be able to post part three of Lynne's interview tomorrow.

Loriann,

I don't know what you are talking about when you way Ugly Duckling! This painting is beautiful! And as far as your content, are you talking about your spending more time on studio paintings? I am loving you studio paintings!! I think they are very successful.

Morning B,

The transition along the horizon from blue on the left to the creamy color on the right is beautiful. It all works so well. I think you've been hanging out with too many ducks Ms. Swan. This is your blog remember, if some choose to leave it's probably because they need to morph as well. Some of us will always be here morphing along with you.

Just do what you have to do ... got it?

Hi Sally,
My discomfort comes from many things- 1. my work that doesn't look as I want it to, 2.change in my schedule- even though I like going into the studio to work I miss the comfort of my daily vitamin. Time is an issue though...can't have it all. There's more, but i will save that for another time.
Thanks for your support!

Hi PB and Donna!
Thanks fr your support.I keep telling myself-the blog was created to help, first me (selfish but true) and maybe through that, others. Thanks for morphing along with me!
hugs, loriann

I didn't leave; I just went to Maine. While there, reading your blog kept me intact. Now that I'm back, your blog and its honesty continues to comfort. You may feel lost in transition, but know that you'll always be a touchstone for many of us.

I understand totally where you are coming from and hope some of my oils will turn into swans soon too. It's all about learning by doing, and painting, painting, painting. Keep going, and I'll keep going right along with you. Until I read your post today I was all but finished with my love affair with Tonalism and oils....but now we are courting again. Thanks Loriann.....

I am forever your devoted fan. Each of your works, no matter the medium, is imbued with your swan spirit.

I love what you wrote and hope that you grow into the authentic artist you are, regardless of any of us out here in the Ethernet.

Truly, this painting is gorgeous!

I favor this piece, too.

Sometimes subscribers disappear because of their own blog instability. They close their blog, or switch templates/hosts. Others switch to different forms of feeds. Just some ideas to think about.

Hi Lisa, You are funny!!! Thanks for your support.

Hi Kvan, You are right; change is uncomfortable...I crave it and am scared of it. Thanks for your support!

Hi Sam,
How was Maine? I did miss you and your comments that are so sharp with words..always right on.

Hi Julie,
Welcome to my blog. True is all I can be. I really enjoyed my visit to your blog.

Hi Maggie,
All we can do is paint- paint and visualize where we want it to be. Welcome to the continued courtship. relationships are like that!

Hi Melinda!
You are so sweet! Thank you for your Very supportive words! Thanks about the painting.

Hi Casey,
It was just weird that the disappearance coincided with the change..poof, poof. It was one of hmmm moments, but won't stop me. Thanks for the other reasons..maybe so. Regards I know I have to move on and I really appreciate your support.

Loriann, your approach is one of creativity and an incredible work ethic. Don't worry about "followers". It's a bit demanding to show ones sleeves online with each piece, but shows true guts. Have no fear, there are plenty of us that can't wait to see what happens next! I love this piece by the way

Hi Brian! Thank you...speaking of work ethics, you are an artist with a great one. It is hard to be sooo exposed. Thanks for your support!

"Quack"? Ha ha haha.
Have sorely missed coming by to visit! Glad I'm back home and can do it again. And I disagree that it's an "ugly."
I cannot possibly imagine why anyone who has been following your blog would cease to do so. Weird.

I think your new direction is very promising!

Good for you Maggie. I will be sure to stop by for the "exposure."

Thanks Jala! I missed you too. I hope that you are feeling better!

This looks gorgeous to me, Loriann - I'd say you're the swan already. There's lots I like about this - the subdued composition, sense of emotion, shifts in color temperature and value...
That gnawing sense of internal dissatisfaction is probably a helpful friend to you, though, since you'll keep pushing yourself toward that vision you have of where you want your work to be headed. As I (frequently) knock out work that stinks, I try to remind myself to enjoy the process. I try to be grateful that I'm learning and that I'll have lots more opportunities to get it right.

Hi Brian! Thanks you! You have brought up a point I never thought about...that my "gnawing sense of internal dissatisfaction" is kindling in the fire that keep me working and striving.
PS I don't believe I have EVER seen a "stinky" piece from you. I love your work!
