oil on wood, 6.5 x 16.5 |
I am infatuated with this tree in the late Autumn light. In LOVE! This is a first in what I see to be a series of paintings demonstrating my love. The tree was on fire as the sun reached its last low lying fingers on top of the tree. It think I got the glow.

Oh yeah, you got the glow! Love the colours in this, a little more bold than you usually opt for and it works beautifully.
This is stunning, Loriann! The hint of tree color on the undersides of the clouds really ties it all together. I look forward to seeing this series grow!
Hi Caroline!
The colors I chose really say how I felt when I saw this..it was HOT! Thanks for your kind comment!
Hi Donna! Thank you! The next one is a biggie..stay tuned. I always appreciate your comments!
You THINK you got the glow?! Ah... yeah. It looks like you're getting somewhere new.
Are we having fun yet?
Hey Sam...yep I am having fun.
I saw from your site you are too.
It's as if I turned on a light that's been dark for a long time. Thanks for your support!
Glow on, Loriann. This is great! Now think BIG ;)
Hey Leah!!! Thanks! BIG I am doing it. I went to the lumber store to buy a big piece of wood. i had planned my next painting and I wanted 44x48! ...problem..it wouldn't fit in the Fitty. Trimmed a little off and now it's 40x44. More about the tree and field on that painting. Did you have another mauve morning?
Loriann,
I've been off line for a number of weeks so I may have missed your transition into painting oil on wood....
I Love the effect of glazing in oil on ply panels...I usually coat them with at least two or three coats of gessso back and front...some times sanded, sometimes not.....I really like the striations which show up in the finished oil painting....it adds texture a little like pastels dragged over the surface. What type of wood and gesso are you using?....what made you try wood instead of canvas?
Really like the colours in this one. Last year I tried some 20 x 20 inches gessoed ply....but did find it difficult, and certainly had to use much bigger brushes.... can't wait to see how you get on with your larger oils.
Maggie
Hi Maggie,
i am using mostly plywood, sometimes birch. I have been gradually stating "woodies"..to me it's like the gator board and marble dust gesso mixture I like with pastel. I agree with you some uneveness is good. I have big house brushes to use for these big ones. I started using the house brushes with the small ones...I sort-of like the lack of control. It's intimidating at first just to see that big space- my next one is 40x44!!! I wanted bigger but it wouldn't fit in the car. As far as gesso. I tried acrylic and oil base..the jury is out still. On this one i am using the M graham alkyd medium instead of liquin. Trying to lower the smell and toxicity. So far I like it..just a little stickier. When i get time i will be over to see what you are up to these days. cheers!
WOW. Please put this at number 1 on my list of all-time favorites. Yep, number ONE.
Number one Jala!!!! Wow that is the highest of compliments from you!!! Thanks!
