torrey pines

10x10 pastel and watercolor on Uart
One of my favorite places here in California is right here, Torrey Pines State Park.
In order to make distance every painter has to remember she/he orchestrates it....translated- alters the colors or values seen. Often times values appear much closer together. If you are to paint it that way you close the distance. So what is seen must be changed.

You definitely got distance in your painting. You suggest even more distance by fuzzing the shapes and lightening and cooling the colors. How many miles? 20? 40? more?

I used to watch hang gliders jump off of the cliffs at Torrey Pines and soar along the ridge until they landed gently on the beach below. If you have to be somewhere other than home, you're in a beautiful spot!

Oh, this is gorgeous, Loriann! The artist's job of altering colors and values has been the hardest concept for me, especially with plein air. You brought this one together beautifully! Enjoy your time out there!

Wow, I like the difference between the dark, deep recesses in the foreground and the ethereal blue in the distance. It's fun to see you interpret a different terrain. Have a great and safe trip!

Hi Kvan! Are you a California girl???? It is beautiful here and the colors are sooooo different than home. Looks like I will be doing some rain paintings for the next few days though..We will see.

Hi Donna! It is hard to grasp just how much power we have to make choices to make our work feel the way we want to..we aren't recorders we make it our own. Thanks for your kind words!

Hi Nika! It is fun to interpret a new terrain. It makes me use an entirely different palette. Thanks for your comment.

The joy of traveling...seeing new colors, expanding ones palette. Great reminders. Great piece.
