memory, Carlson and invention is art

9x18 pastel and watercolor on Uart
Once again..only memory, no references what so ever. I must say it is the most freeing experience in the world. A synthesis of idea, place and past knowledge. I will keep exploring and learning.
So, of course I quote John F. Carlson,"Painting from memory, then aids rearrangement, and rearrangement is the mother of pure invention. Convention is craft; invention is art. In art, knowledge assists invention."

PS A big thank you to all my new and old subscribers and followers! I love y'all ! It feels good to know others enjoy seeing my art and reading my posts.  Feel free to email me your questions or ideas for post topics...

Such joyful yellows! I'm so happy that your new M.O. gives you such pleasure. The results are definitely working. Paint on!

"...rearrangement is the mother of pure invention". Sounds like something mothers say as they rearrange the deck chairs in the living room for the umpteenth time.

Inspiring to see such color...moody color. A refreshing beauty. And that warm yellow just barely peeking from behind such blue clouds is a delight to see. More yummy eye candy.

Hi Sam,
I can count on you to give me a giggle!
I love painting from memory! I think this one needs to be neutralized more...back to the studio.

Hi Brenda!

Hi Loriann,
Your post today answers a question I've had for awhile in reading all your interesting posts on Memory Painting. When I was working on my memory painting for your blog invitation to submit our own paintings, I questioned where my memory left off and invention began. My intention was to submit exactly and only the scene in my memory, but as I worked along I started to "invent", I guess, and included ideas that I know were not in the original scene. I didn't submit the painting as I felt it might be more invention than the original memory. Now I realize that's a natural outcome of this process. Hooray!
