more ocean waves

pastel on somerset paper
When I am stuck on a painting, there is something very soothing about doing a value study.  My best friend Leah sent me photos of her Nova Scotia beaches. This is Clam Harbour. I really want to get to the beach now. But instead I will return to the struggle of painting.

There's something about the shore in that part of the world that's less about color and all about value. These grays are full-spectrum and beautiful.

Thanks John!

Hi Sam!
Good point about the grays there being full spectrum...it gives me an idea. Thank you.

So peaceful, I love the value studies that you do. Will this evolve into a painting?

Hi Loriann,
This value study has the feel of a cold winters day on the beach, the wind in your face and the sound of the waves on the sand.

Ooo, such a wonderful, atmospheric drawing! I can smell salt water.
