fog and use of underpainting

7x8 pastel and watercolor on wallis

When painting fog I can tend to use whimpy colors. I know the fog calms all the colors chroma, but white and colors that tend towards white tend to uninteresting and chalky.
That explains why I began this small roadside study like this.
Knowing also that the color of fog leans cool, I made a warm underpainting to contrast and add a little zing.

Your insistence on non-chalky colors is a thread I am thinking about, too.

I follow, with interest.

Hi Loriann,
Referring to your 16 x 5.5 painting a wonderful symphony of blue & green that you posted this past Thursday-you write that you keep in mind the concept of harmonious color at expense to the "real" colors. I work the same way-
"Make your picture a color statement , not just a landscape"- Edward Betts . If you can find a copy in good condition at a reasonable price I strongly urge you to consider this book- Creative Landscape Painting-Edward Betts. I like the way you approach the subject of fog-in doing so you will create your unique statement. Scoping the scene-I think that it was a great idea to get the lay of the land before the event. Thunderstorms can be exciting to watch but as of late they can be the harbingers of pretty nasty events. Have a great memorial day weekend Loriann and do not forget the sunblock.

Hi Loriann!... My first visit to your colour-filled site... very thought-provoking and visually interesting work!

Thank you for the "play-by-play" on this piece. Seeing the process unfold... gives insight not only to your thinking... but also to your method of interpretation of your subject.

We share many commonalities in our approach to creating art. .. but it is the plein air experience that truly causes our lives to run ... in parallel!

I'll be back for sure! Thanks for sharing!

Good Painting!
Warm regards,
Bruce Sherman

Hi Lori - Love this painting! I've been working on fog and low light paintings as well. I've been experimenting with both underpaintings and complimentary mixing to create more lively greys. I really like your versions here!

Hi Casey, Non-chalky is obsessing me, forcing me to make changes. More to come. Glad to hear we share an obsession.
