Lately I have been thinking, what do I want from the underpainting? I keep making changes. I have found that when I tone the paper first, with a series of different pastels, I can work off of a rich gray. That gray affects the quality of the color I place on top and I like those colors more. Read simultaneous contrast. hmmmm.
PS Did you know that warm painting make us feel safe and warm?

Nice work! That's interesting about toning with grays first. How will it affect the luminosity that you've been achieving in your skies?
Hi Donna!
I think the grayer the tone the less bright color I use. Everything compared to gray can be too bright. New color combinations have been found. Good question!
As I wash off layers of pastel from my "no" paintings of 2012, I often end up with a grayish stain on the paper. I haven't painted on these yet, but I'm eager to! You make it look easy. I'm sure it's not!
hi Kvan, I think you will like the gray stain. You can "enhance it with other color and rub it in. Let me know what you think, k?
