obsessing about water

Lately, during my plein air time, I have been obsessing about water. I use all my plein air morning painting it. After my painting time, I  silently paddle my kayak.

Watching, trying to understand the nuances of the water and its reflections.

As a rule, we know that the reflected image is darker in value and grayer in chroma. The water now has been still with mirror like reflected images and the surface is  cloudy with floating particles that reflect color form the sky and surrounding land masses in interesting ways. The lake in late summer is truly its warmest brown near the shore.
Its beauty can make you want to cry.

Hi Loriann nice to hear you are making the best of the last days of summer by being out in your wee boat just drifting along studying the water. Your painting is lovely and I also very much liked the warm and cool paintings in your last post. I am interested to know what size of paintings these are.

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your comment. The days in September and october are gorgeous here. Cooler, yet never cold. Today I actually had to wear sleeves- That's a new concept here!
As for the size of the last few paintings of water. I usually work small in plein air. Today's painting is 8x8 and the two others are 6x6. BTW I checked your blog and really loved the grayed down sky painting, but couldn't comment. Not sure why. Mystery.

Hi Loriann,
I love that you study the water while you paint and from your kayak.

Hi Loriann, thanks for dropping by my blog, sorry the comment box was giving some problem, I have the same trouble with Rhonda's blog some days the comment box won't take my comment. Thanks for the sizes of these works, my that is tiny! I thought my 12 x 12 inch works was small! I too wore sleeves today, autumn really is slowly creeping in!

Hi Liz, Life is good, eh? thanks for dropping by!

Caroline, I will try to comment again when I visit next. Sometimes those comment boxes seem to be hungry.

It is beautiful. I find water the hardest of all subjects to paint. Try continuing that white line that is on either side of the trees by touching it under the trees in a few places where the water would touch the shore. It will make the water look like it is lapping on the shore. I know the trees are overhanging in places so you wouldn't do it there. Just a suggestion. It is a beautiful, soft painting and I can't believe you did it in a kayak. xo Jenny
