Giving Thanks

8x9 pastel and watercolor on Uart paper $100.
The river was still and much warmer today. Nice. Found a new spot...... then I struggled with this one. Later, back in the studio I realized that I had strayed and forgotten the "mother color."

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. What a beautiful world in which we live!

October 4, 2008 #342 Happy Anniversary!!!!

8x8 pastel and watercolor on Uart paper $150. plus tax and ship
Today marks my one year anniversary blogging: one year, 342 entries/paintings!
Painting is mostly about discipline and willingness to explore. Talent comes after: for without discipline and openness , nothing grows.
To mark my anniversary I, of course, visited my old friend, the river.
I want to thank all my loyal subscribers for sharing my year long journey with me. I invite you to send me an anniversary comment about my works, past or present.
Can't wait to see what is next!

4.75x9, pastel on Uart paper, $75.
4.75x 4.75pastel on Uart paper
Today I once again did light key studies. Clear, crisp, early morning light is one of my favorites.

September 13, 2008 Fleeting Golden Moment

9x12 pastel and watercolor on mounted wallis paper $100.
This was a speed painting. It rained as I walked to the river and then suddenly it cleared. Still, I could hear thunder in the distance. The sky was lemon and gold and the glow was violet. Quickly I painted, fanned the board dry and moved my pastels gingerly over the slightly wet surface. To capture the essence of the moment was my only goal.
I think I will use this in the studio to create a bigger painting.

September 1, 2008 Streamin'

7x7, pastel on board
The light was just beautiful as it streamed through the canopy and bounced off the stream. Beautiful and elusive. So much remains unfinished as I struggled to get that wonderful feeling. I guess I will have to go back to this location and try again.

August 13, 2008 The Lush Green Beyond

11x14, pastel on board
The river wears her lushest, deepest greens before the Autumn change.
Dark against light and color vibrations, those were today's challenges.

April 27, 2008 Less is More

14x17 pastel with oil underpainting
I have been working on this one for awhile now. I was ready to give up and then I had an idea and finally it is starting to come together. Less is more.
The location on the canal (beside the river) near Cabin John. I want to live in that little NPS house. Can you see it back there?
