Tip of the Island

8x10 pastel and watercolor on Uart paper
It's raining outside...which is one of my favorite weather conditions to paint. I parked myself under a dense tree with my humongous umbrella. First question : why did you choose this spot? Answer, I loved the place where the warmer, close mass of trees (the island) meets the far away land. Make certain that area has the detail. Refrain from uniformity of detail. The chant still is warm/ cool, dark /light. It took forever for the watercolor to dry, so I dove in a little early. It taught me a new way of utilizing slightly damp pastel:-)

Beautiful
And I commend your dedication to paint in the rain with pastels.

Thank you Susan. Yes, you are right. Painting in the rain is a challenge and even more so with pastels. The beauty of the landscape makes the trickiness of the situation worth while.

Hi Loriann,
I agree with Susan about your dedication to paint in the rain with pastels. I think that it would be easier though to bring some pastels out in rainy conditions rather than a French easel filled with tubes of paint. Hopefully you brought something warm to drink to ward off the chill of a cold spring rain.Your dedication shows .....once again a beautifull painting that captures a sense of place. Of course as we know not every painting can be a "winner" but looking back over the past few postings you are in the "zone" & truly connected to the landscape

BTW- How did the paper hold up under those conditions? What do you like about the paper that you have been using? I notice that you have not used Canson which has been one of my prefered choices for colored pencil and oil pastels. I read some comments at the Wet Canvas web site and it seems that Canson is not beloved by all.

I love how you capture the many moods and nuances of the river. Just like Monet!

Thanks Jala and Janelle. I do love the river. I can sure understand why Monet returned to his special locations and then just stayed in Giverney.
