studies of a new painting:back to watercolor underpaintings

9x12 watercolor and pastel on Wallis
12x12 pencil on somerset velvet/ eggshell
I am planning a bigger painting that was inspired by my painting from April 7th . My intention today was to simply study the reflections and how best to make space. Yesterday I did this very detailed study (below), simply as a discipline, another way of knowing my place.
I am back to watercolor under my pastel, something I did for about 5 years and moved away from these last few months. I want to continue using watercolor underneath....but still the quest for new paper goes on. When I painted this one on an old piece of Wallis, the paper resisted some of the watercolor, but at least I could push the pastel into the sanded surface.  I use bristle brushes, the same type  I use when painting with oils (but not the same brushes.) Sanded papers really beat up your brushes!

The watercolor/pastel has wonderful light, but I have to say that the pencil sketch is fabulous! Sometimes, the simple line has the most color. You're a really good drawer. A pencil champ.

Thanks Sam! I love to draw! Each time I do actually sit still to make just a pencil drawing I feel satisfied and grounded. I guess I should take time more often. Is that a duh moment or what?!

Hi B,
I think the pencil sketch is great. We never get to see this talent from you. Nice to experience the view.
It would be interesting to watch you sit still.

I agree Sam, definitely a pencil champ!

Love this one, you captured that diffused light so convincingly. It reminds me of winter light you see in Venice with sun coming through the fog.
I missed the last post where you mourned the loss of your swamp, but there's plenty of swamp around here, you're welcome to come and revel in it:)

Hi PB,
Thank you about the pencil sketch. I was amazed how soothing it was for me to just require line....like a wonderful vacation.
Sitting sit will never be my strength.
pencil champ...heehee

Hi Nika,
I will be back to revel in your swamps.. the colors are so different too!!!
Thank you about the light in this one. I am studying the bouncing effect of light on water. Glad you feel it works. Spring light here is so much lighter and bouncier than summer light.

You could try adding a little ox gall to your watercolor. Just a drop or two in a cup of water, mixed in with your paint might make the paint saturate better. It's a surficant.

Hi Karen, Interesting comment. Do you use Ox gall? How does it change the surface feeling? I looked it up on google and found it on Dick Blick. Tell me more please.
